Story: The Stairs Of Miss Dipta's House

Once there was a lady named Miss Kritika Dipta. She lived alone in her two-story building.  She used to work as a junior editor in a newspaper company. Her house was small and too old; it was built by her grandfather. The walls had many cracks, the furniture was old styled, the paint turned dirty and the mirrors of some windows were broken and missed.

The spiral stairs of iron were out of the house on the lawn side to go up. Those stairs were now not so strong, since they were rusted and weak, when someone climbed on them, they used to sound very oddly and used to tremble. Miss Dipta always used a ladder to go up from inside of the house as she felt that the stairs were not in a condition to be used and one or two steps of the stairs were not suitable to bear any load. Miss Dipta many times thought to repair them but her financial conditions were not good enough so she was unable to do so.

Sometimes children from the neighborhood used to play near her house and in between, they began to hang out with the stairs. Whenever Miss Dipta saw them, she used to scold them too harshly saying, "Go away or I will beat you with the stick", and the children used to run away due to fear, this has created a terror among the children that the lady was rude. But this was all because she didn't want anyone to get hurt because of her and then she used to say to herself, "Oh no, I have to fence these stairs soon otherwise someday someone may get hurt.” But she always forgot to do so because of her other works of office and house.

Once Miss Dipta was out of town for two days, to visit her uncle who was ill. The day when she was returning, the very night of it, about 1’o clock, a thief was passing by her house, found the window of the above floor of Miss Dipta’s house open. He was a little fat, having a wild beard, looking dirty, wore a monkey-styled cap that can hide his face from revealing, and was a little drunk. He had an evil will to do the theft so he crossed the small wall of the lawn and stood nearby those stairs. He looked at them and without any consideration, he began to climb them as it was dark.

He had no idea what he was going to do, as he stepped his first foot on the stairs he felt some vibration in the stairs but he ignored them and slowly started moving up. He was just 4-5 steps away when he stepped on a completely rusted one which was unable to bear his load and suddenly the step was broken down and he stuck in between them. Now, he was unable to think about what to do as his tummy was stuck in between the stairs. He tried many a time to come out but he failed. He struggled for 2 and a half hours. In the meantime, he shouted many times but no one listened to him as all were sleeping.

He was continuously calling for help. After a lot of effort, near about 3-4 am a lady from the opposite building on the other hand of Miss Dipta’s house open the window as her sleep was broken due to the noise. As she looked forward, she found the man tangled between the stairs, his half portion above the belly was on the upper side of the stairs and he was hanging his legs down from below.

When she looked at his situation, she was amazed but when she observed his half masked face she became joyous and began to laugh. She said aloud, “what happen bhaiya, why are you hanging there?” Thief when looked at her felt  relieved and said, “madam please help, I am trapped here for 3 hrs.” She laughed and said, "ok, let me call my husband.” Then she went inside to call her husband, here the thief was realizing that today he was going to be beaten very well.

Then the lady with her husband came down and some other people of the colony were also joined them. They were all enjoying and laughing at him. One man from the crowd said, “What happened, what are you doing there?” He answered, “Please forgive me, I came here to steal but I stuck down. I promise that I will never do this work again." They all laughed. Another man again said, “See, you got the result of your deed.” They all were laughing and murmuring, here he was shouting for help. Then some men went to help him out.

In all this, Miss Dipta reached back to her home, when she saw such a huge crowd in front of her house so early morning, she turned worried. She immediately reached there, when she saw the man hanging in between her stairs. She said, “What happened? Why is this man was hanging there?” A lady among them answered,” Dipta, you have to proud of your stairs, as it saved your house otherwise this man cleans all. Your stairs worked well.”

When she came to know all the matter, she had a smile on her face and she said to him, “What!  bad man. See this is the result of your evil deeds.” The man said sorry to her, then some men helped him and he was rescued. When he came down he again said sorry to her and to all the people there and promised that he will never do this wrong work again and he went immediately away from there.  People also forgave him as he got his punishment already. All were happy as their morning began with a good lesson and said, “Miss Kritika, today your stairs saved you.”
